Rule Change Proposal: Reduce Number of Max Protects

Stan just posted an email to the WBRL Yahoo group, suggesting reducing the maximum number of protections. He suggested a max of 10 for 2009, or an incremental step of 12 for 2009, and 10 for 2010.

Either way, the first step is to discuss and vote whether to reduce the maximum from 15. Then we’ll get into specific numbers and implementation.

Free Agents No More

These guys have re-signed or have exercised options for 2008, so are eligible for protection for their 2007 team:

Team Pos Player
Goodfellas 1B Scott Hatteberg
Goodfellas C Brad Ausmus
Cover Zero OF Adam Dunn
Shoeless Jews C Javier Valentin
Uncle Lester 2B Damion Easley
Atomic Roadrunners OF Moises Alou
Get Off Kong! P Greg Maddux

Phillies/Astros Trade: How Steve got a Closer for $1

A ho-hum trade from Rotiss perspective:

Phillies acquire: Brad Lidge, Eric Bruntlett

Astros acquire: Michael Bourn, Geoff Geary, and AA 3B Michael Costanzo

WBRL Impact:

Michael Bourn (Shoeless Jews) - GOOD - He gets a bump with (presumably) a starting CF and leadoff job, still a hitter’s park.

Brad Lidge (Goodfellas) - EVEN - He goes to another HR park, but for a winning team, so more save opps, but more crowd pressure. Is this the reciprocity for Mitch Williams circa 1994?

Luke Scott (Misogynistic Padres) - BAD - Presumably Scott gets bumped to 4th OF / bench, although rumors indicate he’ll be traded, which could help the situation, unless it’s in the AL.

Chad Qualls (Cover Zero) - GOOD - The de-facto closer for the Astros right now. For $1.

X-Men: Renteria Traded to Detroit (AL)

Alex’s big trade from last season looks even weaker now that Edgar Renteria has been traded by the Braves to the Tigers (for Gorkys Hernandez and Jair Jurrjens). Alex commented that his trade with Nygard looks even worse. To recap:

To Nygard Contract To X-Men Contract
Ryan Braun $5 / 2 Edwin Encarnacion Expired
Troy Tulowitzki $10 / 2 Jeff Francoeur Expired
Luke Scott $5 / 1 Noah Lowry Expired
    Edgar Renteria AL
    Albert Pujols $52 / 2

Update (11/7/07): With the Phillies/Astros trade, it looks like Luke Scott is either going to be on the bench or traded, so Alex gets a little more balance here, but not much.

Both Andrew and Barry had $260 rolled over to next season.

I’ve noticed some of your Yahoo Group email addresses don’t coincide with your CBS Sports emails. Please let me know which you favor for the Yahoo Group going forward.

Please Provide Rule Change Suggestions

For the next 2-3 weeks, please submit suggestions for rules changes or clarifications to this post. We’ll then discuss and potentially vote on popular suggestions.

If there are no suggestions, I guess everyone is pretty happy with the way things are . . .

CBS Roster Update

I’ve removed all non-protectable players from each team’s roster, and I have updated the contract and salaries for all players. I’ve also activated everyone except those eligible for protection as a minor leaguer.

Reminder:  Due to the vote last year regarding the "tainted" prospects, both Ian Stewart and Neil Walker are not eligible to be protected in the minor leagues.  Two of the other three prospects, Felix Pie and Justin Upton, were activated this season, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia was traded to the AL.
